Polynomials

Monic polynomial

In algebra, a monic polynomial is a single-variable polynomial (that is, a univariate polynomial) in which the leading coefficient (the nonzero coefficient of highest degree) is equal to 1. Therefore, a monic polynomial has the form: (Wikipedia).

Abstract Algebra | Writing the gcd of polynomials as a combination.

We prove that the greatest common divisor of any two polynomials over a field can be written as polynomial combinations of the original polynomials. This is Bezout's identity for polynomials. Please Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/michaelpennmath?sub_confirmation=1 Personal Website: h

The Minimal Polynomial

Proof of the existence of the minimal polynomial. Every polynomial that annihilates an operator is a polynomial multiple of the minimal polynomial of the operator. The eigenvalues of an operator are precisely the zeros of the minimal polynomial of the operator.

Factoring Trinomials with the Box Method // Math Minute [#31] [ALGEBRA]

Second-degree trinomials can be split up into two groups for the purposes of factoring: those in which the coefficient of the xΒ² term is equal to 1 (we call these monic quadratics) and those in which that coefficient is NOT equal to 1 (we call these non-monic quadratics). If a given trinom

Cayley-Hamilton Theorem: General Case

Matrix Theory: We state and prove the Cayley-Hamilton Theorem over a general field F. That is, we show each square matrix with entries in F satisfies its characteristic polynomial. We consider the special cases of diagonal and companion matrices before giving the proof.
