Sulfur oxyanions

Peroxydisulfate

The peroxydisulfate ion, S2O2−8, is an oxyanion, the anion of peroxydisulfuric acid. It is commonly referred to as persulfate, but this term also refers to the peroxomonosulfate ion, SO2−5. It is also called peroxodisulfate. Approximately 500,000 tons of salts containing this anion are produced annually. Important salts include sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8), potassium persulfate (K2S2O8), and ammonium persulfate ((NH4)2S2O8). These salts are colourless, water-soluble solids that are strong oxidants.: (Wikipedia).

Epoxidation of Alkenes - DMDO, mCPBA, & NaOCl (IOC 26)

In this episode, I discuss the epoxidation of electron-rich and electron-poor olefins, using peracids, DMDO, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). *Note: for some reason, I didn't manage to pronounce MMPP correctly; it's full name is magnesium monoperoxyphthalate. *WARNING*

Making Calcium Peroxide (CaO2)

In today’s video we are making calcium peroxide from sodium hydroxide, calcium chloride and hydrogen peroxide. Calcium peroxide is an oxidizing agent and it could be used to make oxygen by simply heating it. Our yield was low but we managed to make some. Just to put it somewhere: the produ

Glycerol and Potassium Permanganate

When glycerol and dry potassium permanaganate are added together, an extremely exothermic reaction occurs. The potassium permanaganate is an extremely strong oxidizer and it completely oxidizes the glycerol to water and carbon dioxide.

Making cesium dichromate from chromium metal and cesium chloride

To explore an alternative route to make cesium metal, I made some cesium dichromate. Cesium dichromate can be reduced to cesium metal. Because I did not have any chromate compounds, I made the potassium dichromate myself by dissolving chromium metal and oxidizing it with hydrogen peroxid
