Neutron radiation

Neutron radiation is a form of ionizing radiation that presents as free neutrons. Typical phenomena are nuclear fission or nuclear fusion causing the release of free neutrons, which then react with nuclei of other atoms to form new isotopes—which, in turn, may trigger further neutron radiation. Free neutrons are unstable, decaying into a proton, an electron, plus an electron antineutrino. Free neutrons have a mean lifetime of 887 seconds (14 minutes, 47 seconds). Neutron radiation is distinct from alpha, beta and gamma radiation. (Wikipedia).

What Are Neutron Stars?

When a dying star is too massive to leave behind a white dwarf and not massive enough to leave behind a black hole, you get a neutron star (sometimes a pulsar). It's a very compact clump of neutrons surrounded by a very strong magnetic field. These things are crazy!! ______________________

Radiation vs Radioactive Atoms

There seems to be confusion about what radiation is and where it comes from. Many people believe it is the radiation that comes directly from nuclear power plants that poses a threat to public safety. In fact it is the radioactive atoms, which can escape in the event of an explosion, that
