Electrical discharge in gases

Electric discharge in gases

Electric discharge in gases occurs when electric current flows through a gaseous medium due to ionization of the gas. Depending on several factors, the discharge may radiate visible light. The properties of electric discharges in gases are studied in connection with design of lighting sources and in the design of high voltage electrical equipment. (Wikipedia).

Is a flame really a plasma?

There are certainly ions in a flame, formed as molecules collide with each other at high speed, sometimes knocking electrons off of their atoms. Using ruhmkorff coil about 100 000V on two metal plates, we created strong electric field around the plasma. This pulled positive ions in one dir

Sparks, ionisation in an electric field: from fizzics.org

Sparks will occur if an electric field in sufficiently strong. A strong elctric field requires a high potential difference and is more intense around a sharp curve or point. That spark might be initiated by a random occurance of ionising radiation creating free electrons which in turn caus

Sound + Fire = Rubens' Tube

Sound waves in a tube of gas create flames of different heights that dance to the music. A metal tube with holes in it is filled with gas. The gas is lit to create a row of tiny flames. A speaker at one end plays sound into the tube, which creates a standing wave of sound: areas where air
