Knot theory

Wirtinger presentation

In mathematics, especially in group theory, a Wirtinger presentation is a finite presentation where the relations are of the form where is a word in the generators, Wilhelm Wirtinger observed that the complements of knots in 3-space have fundamental groups with presentations of this form. Xiadong Li: Phase Retrieval from Convex to Nonconvex Methods

Xiadong Li: Phase Retrieval from Convex to Nonconvex Methods Abstract: In phase retrieval, one aims to recover a signal from magnitude measurements. In the literature, an effective SDP algorithm, referred to as PhaseLift, was proposed with numerical success as well as strong theoretical g

SYN122 - The Function of the Verb - Tense

This first of a series of three E-Lectures deals with the function of the verb in PDE, in particular with the notion of tense. Prof. Handke explains why PDE has only two tenses, the present and the past tense, and how they are used. The discussion why PDE has no future tense concludes this

Ximena Fernández 7/20/22: Morse theory for group presentations and the persistent fundamental group

Discrete Morse theory is a combinatorial tool to simplify the structure of a given (regular) CW-complex up to homotopy equivalence, in terms of the critical cells of discrete Morse functions. In this talk, I will present a refinement of this theory that guarantees not only a homotopy equiv
