Complexity economics

The Atlas of Economic Complexity

The Atlas of Economic Complexity: Mapping Paths to Prosperity is a 2011 economics book by Ricardo Hausmann, Cesar A. Hidalgo, Sebastián Bustos, Michele Coscia, Sarah Chung, Juan Jimenez, Alexander Simoes and Muhammed A. Yıldırım. A revised 2014 edition is published by the MIT Press. The book attempts to measure the amount of productive knowledge that each country holds, by visualizing the differences between national economies. The book's originality is to go beyond standard statistics by making use of “complexity statistics” of 128 countries. The book concludes with hints "at how difficult and complex it may be for government planners to kick-start a new industry — while showing that there are new industries that will struggle to get started without help.". The book is accompanied by two websites that host interactive visualizations and expand upon data featured in the book: MIT’s https://oec.world/en/ and Harvard’s http://atlas.cid.harvard.edu/. The Atlas was a collaboration between the Center for International Development at Harvard University and the Macro Connections group at the MIT Media Lab. (Wikipedia).

2. Utilities, Endowments, and Equilibrium

Financial Theory (ECON 251) This lecture explains what an economic model is, and why it allows for counterfactual reasoning and often yields paradoxical conclusions. Typically, equilibrium is defined as the solution to a system of simultaneous equations. The most important economic mode

Introduction to Economics

What is economics? Yes, of course it has to do with money. But beyond the concepts that we might immediately think of, like taxes, gross domestic product, and the stock market, which belong to macroeconomics, we must also understand microeconomics. Deconstructing the personal decisions we

This is a sobering and perhaps disorienting introduction to the fact that arithmetic with bigger numbers starts to look quite different from the familiar arithmetic that we do with the small numbers we are used to. The notion of complexity is key in our treatment of this. We talk about bot

Financial Theory (ECON 251) Our understanding of the economy will be more tangible and vivid if we can in principle explain all the economic decisions of every agent in the economy. This lecture demonstrates, with two examples, how the theory lets us calculate equilibrium prices and all

Complexity and hyperoperations | Data Structures Math Foundations 174

We introduce the idea of the complexity of a natural number: a measure of how hard it is to actually write down an arithmetical expression that evaluates to that number. This notion does depend on a prior choice of arithmetical symbols that we decide upon, but the general features are surp
