The sulfate nitrates are a family of double salts that contain both sulfate and nitrate ions (NO3−, SO42−). They are in the class of mixed anion compounds. A few rare minerals are in this class. Two sulfate nitrates are in the class of anthropogenic compounds, accidentally made as a result of human activities in fertilizers that are a mix of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, and also in the atmosphere as polluting ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide react with the oxygen and water there to form solid particles. The nitro group (NO3−) can act as a ligand, and complexes containing it can form salts with sulfate. (Wikipedia).
A Level Chemistry Revision "Testing for Sulfate Ions"
In this video, we look at how to test for the presence of the sulfate ion. First we look at the sulfate test. We then explore the advantage of using barium nitrate rather than barium chloride. Finally, we look at how to deal with the presence of carbonate ions, which can give a false posit

Make Nitric Acid by Thermal Decomposition of Copper Nitrate
In this video we the thermal decomposition of copper to directly produce nitric acid without using any other acid. Normally to make nitric acid you react a nitrate salt with a strong acid like sulfuric acid. But what if we wanted to make it without any acids at all? Copper nitrate has

Make Sulfuric Acid (Copper Sulfate Electrochemical Method)
How to make sulfuric acid by electrolysis of copper sulfate using an inert anode. Copper sulfate is very easy to obtain in large quantities at gardening and hardware stores and provides a convenient route to sulfuric acid if the appropriate anode can be obtained. Warning: This should be

Lab Notes - August 31st - Nitric Acid from Calcium Nitrate and My Hotplate Failed, Again.
Some lab notes for the month of august 2020 I was exploring more nitric acid and wanted to see if calcium nitrate and sodium bisulfate would be viable. The rationale is that the reaction of calcium nitrate and sulfuric acid is well-known but almost never done directly since it produces in
