Species diversity is the number of different species that are represented in a given community (a dataset). The effective number of species refers to the number of equally abundant species needed to obtain the same mean proportional species abundance as that observed in the dataset of interest (where all species may not be equally abundant). Meanings of species diversity may include species richness, taxonomic or phylogenetic diversity, and/or species evenness. Species richness is a simple count of species. Taxonomic or phylogenetic diversity is the genetic relationship between different groups of species. Species evenness quantifies how equal the abundances of the species are. (Wikipedia).
Are all coral reefs the same? Each regional ecosystem has its own assemblage of species and each contributes uniquely to global biodiversity. Explore why ecosystem diversity is important for conservation decisions. For more biodiversity tutorials, visit http://bit.ly/cas-khan.

What is biodiversity and why is it important?
Leah Gerber, director of ASU's Center for Biodiversity Outcomes, says biodiversity can be defined as all aspects of nature. The importance of biodiversity, she says, is that diverse contributions lead to healthier ecosystems.

What Is A Species? | Evolution | Biology | FuseSchool
Carl Linnaeus classified all living things into groups based upon their physical features. His system placed organisms with the most similar characteristics together in a group he called the “species”. A species is defined as all organisms that are able to breed with one another, and mos

Has Madagascar Maxed Out Its Diversity?
Madagascar is home to an unparalleled diversity of plant and animal life. But the emergence of new species may be a thing of the past. A recent study uncovered evidence that following a period of rapid diversification, new species emergence slowed dramatically. Environmental resources coul

Evolutionary processes fostering resilience on islands
Islands are famous as crucibles for processes of adaptation and diversification, but they are also naturally conducive to small populations whose lack of genetic diversity can impede adaptation. This talk by Scott Edwards of Harvard University reviews basic processes of population genetic

Principles of Evolution, Ecology and Behavior (EEB 122) One can look at biodiversity from several perspectives. An ecological point of view tries to determine how necessary diversity is for an ecosystem to function. An economic point of view tries to capture the value of the "services"
