Complex surfaces 3: Rational surfaces

We give an informal survey of some complex rational surfaces. We first lift a few examples: hypersurfaces of degree at most 3, and the Hirzebruch surfaces which are P1 bundles over P1. Then we discuss the surfaces obtained by blowing up points in the plane in more detail. We sketch how to

Recent work of Kass–Wickelgren gives an enriched count of the 27 lines on a smooth cubic surface over arbitrary fields, generalizing Segre’s signed count count of elliptic and hyperbolic lines. Their approach using 𝔸1-enumerative geometry suggests that other classical enumerative problems

Type-I Superconductors vs. Type-II Superconductors | Superconductivity | Condensed Matter Physics

If you expose a superconducting material to a weak magnetic field, there will be no field inside the superconductor, except for a small region around the boundary, which is known as the Meissner effect. However, when you increase the strength of the magnetic field, at some point, supercond
