Inter-rater reliability

Scott's Pi

Scott's pi (named after William A Scott) is a statistic for measuring inter-rater reliability for nominal data in communication studies. Textual entities are annotated with categories by different annotators, and various measures are used to assess the extent of agreement between the annotators, one of which is Scott's pi. Since automatically annotating text is a popular problem in natural language processing, and the goal is to get the computer program that is being developed to agree with the humans in the annotations it creates, assessing the extent to which humans agree with each other is important for establishing a reasonable upper limit on computer performance. Calculating pi with a pendulum

Inspired by Paul Taylor, I have made a pendulum to calculate pi. A pi-endulum. Its length is a quarter of the value for the acceleration due to gravity, so its period is exactly one pi. Watch Paul's version: https://youtu.be/UUH1wxwT9AE?t=1m55s Watch a mile of pi: https://www.youtube.com

From the creators of "e is irrational" comes now the proof that pi is irrational. This proof is originally due to Niven and only uses calculus, but it is very non-intuitive. That said, it is absolutely fascinating, so be prepared for a fun ride!

The Meaning of Pi

More important than knowing a bunch of digits in the decimal approximation of Pi is to understand what Pi means. Pi is the ratio of the Circumference to the Diameter of any circle. Multiply the diameter by Pi to get the circumference or divide the circumference by pi to get the diameter.
