Semigroup theory

Orthodox semigroup

In mathematics, an orthodox semigroup is a regular semigroup whose set of idempotents forms a subsemigroup. In more recent terminology, an orthodox semigroup is a regular E-semigroup. The term orthodox semigroup was coined by T. E. Hall and presented in a paper published in 1969. Certain special classes of orthodox semigroups had been studied earlier. For example, semigroups that are also unions of groups, in which the sets of idempotents form subsemigroups were studied by P. H. H. Fantham in 1960. (Wikipedia).

Symmetric Groups (Abstract Algebra)

Symmetric groups are some of the most essential types of finite groups. A symmetric group is the group of permutations on a set. The group of permutations on a set of n-elements is denoted S_n. Symmetric groups capture the history of abstract algebra, provide a wide range of examples in

Quotient groups

The idea of a quotient group follows easily from cosets and Lagrange's theorem. In this video, we start with a normal subgroup and develop the idea of a quotient group, by viewing each coset (together with the normal subgroup) as individual mathematical objects in a set. This set, under

Definition of a group Lesson 24

In this video we take our first look at the definition of a group. It is basically a set of elements and the operation defined on them. If this set of elements and the operation defined on them obey the properties of closure and associativity, and if one of the elements is the identity el

Normal subgroups

Before we carry on with our coset journey, we need to discover when the left- and right cosets are equal to each other. The obvious situation is when our group is Abelian. The other situation is when the subgroup is a normal subgroup. In this video I show you what a normal subgroup is a

AlgTopReview4: Free abelian groups and non-commutative groups

Free abelian groups play an important role in algebraic topology. These are groups modelled on the additive group of integers Z, and their theory is analogous to the theory of vector spaces. We state the Fundamental Theorem of Finitely Generated Commutative Groups, which says that any such

Walter van Suijlekom: Semigroup of inner perturbations in Non Commutative Geometry

Starting with an algebra, we define a semigroup which extends the group of invertible elements in that algebra. As we will explain, this semigroup describes inner perturbations of noncommutative manifolds, and has applications to gauge theories in physics. We will present some elementary e

Group automorphisms in abstract algebra

Group automorphisms are bijective mappings of a group onto itself. In this tutorial I define group automorphisms and introduce the fact that a set of such automorphisms can exist. This set is proven to be a subgroup of the symmetric group. You can learn more about Mathematica on my Udem
