Prismatoid polyhedra

Octagonal antiprism

In geometry, the octagonal antiprism is the 6th in an infinite set of antiprisms formed by an even-numbered sequence of triangle sides closed by two polygon caps. Antiprisms are similar to prisms except the bases are twisted relative to each other, and that the side faces are triangles, rather than quadrilaterals. In the case of a regular 8-sided base, one usually considers the case where its copy is twisted by an angle 180°/n. Extra regularity is obtained by the line connecting the base centers being perpendicular to the base planes, making it a right antiprism. As faces, it has the two n-gonal bases and, connecting those bases, 2n isosceles triangles. If faces are all regular, it is a semiregular polyhedron. (Wikipedia).

Incredibly hard geometry problem from Russia

This challenging problem was given to students in Russia, but it stumped me! The question was presented as text only--no diagram. Also, the problem was part of an entrance exam for a selective high school. Can you solve it? From each corner of a parallelogram, draw two line segments to con

How Many Faces, Edges And Vertices Does A Octagonal Prism Have?

How Many Faces, Edges And Vertices Does A Octagonal Prism Have? Here we’ll look at how to work out the faces, edges of vertices of an octagonal prism. We’ll start by counting the faces, these are the flat surfaces that make the 3D shape. An octagonal prism has 10 faces altogether - 2 o

Corinna Ulcigrai - 4/6 Parabolic dynamics and renormalization: an introduction

Parabolic dynamical systems are mathematical models of the many phenomena which display a "slow" form of chaotic evolution, in the sense that nearby trajectories diverge polynomially in time. In contrast with hyperbolic and elliptic dynamical systems, there is no general theory which desc

We describe how the two-holed torus and the 3-crosscaps surface can be given hyperbolic geometric structure. For the two-holed torus we cut it into 4 hexagons and then describe a tesselation of the hyperbolic plane (using the Beltrami Poincare model described in the previous lecture) compo
