Gregory number

In mathematics, a Gregory number, named after James Gregory, is a real number of the form: where x is any rational number greater or equal to 1. Considering the power series expansion for arctangent, we have Setting x = 1 gives the well-known Leibniz formula for pi. Thus, in particular, is a Gregory number. (Wikipedia).

Computing π: Machin-like formula

Machin-like formulae are used to find many decimal places of pi, although why they work can seem confusing. This lesson shows how the Taylor Series of arctangent is used to compute π, and the power of combining it with Machin's approach, as well as covering the history of Gregory, Leibniz,
