Derivative test

In calculus, a derivative test uses the derivatives of a function to locate the critical points of a function and determine whether each point is a local maximum, a local minimum, or a saddle point. Derivative tests can also give information about the concavity of a function. The usefulness of derivatives to find extrema is proved mathematically by Fermat's theorem of stationary points. The true second derivative test

In this video I present the second derivative test in multivariable calculus, which is used to find local maxima/minima/saddle points of a function. However, unlike the nonsense they usually teach in the books, here I'm presenting a more elegant way with some linear algebra blended in. I'm

What is the Derivative?

Derivatives are the main object of study in differential calculus. They describe rates of change of functions. That makes them incredibly useful in all of science, as many models can be expressed by describing the changes over time (e.g. of physical quantities). However, the abstract defin

Where Does the Definition of the Derivative Come From?

A student asked about the definition of the derivative in class so I derived the definition really quickly. We had just finished covering infinite limits so we were not talking about derivatives yet, but it was such a good question that I thought I should share this here. I hope this hel
