In mathematical physics, the conformal symmetry of spacetime is expressed by an extension of the Poincaré group. The extension includes special conformal transformations and dilations. In three spatial plus one time dimensions, conformal symmetry has 15 degrees of freedom: ten for the Poincaré group, four for special conformal transformations, and one for a dilation. Harry Bateman and Ebenezer Cunningham were the first to study the conformal symmetry of Maxwell's equations. They called a generic expression of conformal symmetry a spherical wave transformation. General relativity in two spacetime dimensions also enjoys conformal symmetry. (Wikipedia).
Conformal Field Theory (CFT) | Infinitesimal Conformal Transformations
Conformal field theories are used in many areas of physics, from condensed matter physics, to statistical physics to string theory. They are defined as quantum field theories that are invariant under so-called conformal transformations. In this video, we will investigate these conformal tr

http://www.teachastronomy.com/ A lot of fundamental concepts in physics are based on the idea of symmetry. Symmetry is familiar to us in an aesthetic sense. It often means things that have pleasing proportion, or look the same from every direction, or have a harmonious nature about them.

Symmetries show up everywhere in physics. But what is a symmetry? While the symmetries of shapes can be interesting, a lot of times, we are more interested in symmetries of space or symmetries of spacetime. To describe these, we need to build "invariants" which give a mathematical represen
