A balance puzzle or weighing puzzle is a logic puzzle about balancing items—often coins—to determine which holds a different value, by using balance scales a limited number of times. These differ from puzzles that assign weights to items, in that only the relative mass of these items is relevant. For example, in detecting a dissimilar coin in three weighings (n = 3), the maximum number of coins that can be analyzed is 33 − 1/2 = 13. Note that with 3 weighs and 13 coins, it is not always possible to determine the identity of the last coin (whether it is heavier or lighter than the rest), but merely that the coin is different. In general, with n weighs, you can determine the identity of a coin if you have 3n − 1/2 - 1 or less coins. In the case n = 3, you can truly discover the identity of the different coin out of 12 coins. (Wikipedia).

Balance puzzles challenge the puzzler to manipulate an object to bring it into balance, e.g. the Columbus Egg. The puzzle leaves the puzzler in the “dark”, there are no or hardly any visual clues. In order to solve the puzzle other senses need to be used, e.g. hearing, tactile sense, combi

Physics, Torque (3 of 13) Balance Beam
Shows how to determine the location of the third mass on the balance beam so that the beam will be in static equilibrium or balanced. Torque is a rotating force. It is a measure of how much force is acting on an object that causes the object to rotate. The object will rotate about an axis

Two metal forks, a cork, and a matchstick balance on the lip of a glass. The center of mass of the fork-cork-match system is well below the pivot point, so balance is able to return after small perturbations. Please be careful when playing with matches. For more details on this setup, see
